Hello Fireweed Families!

It was so nice to meet with everyone at conferences! Our class has grown so much! We had an observer, Betsy Hoke, in our classroom today and she said it looked much more normalized than it did back in November. According to The North American Montessori Teacher Association: Maria Montessori observed that when children are allowed freedom in an environment suited to their needs, they blossom. After a period of intense concentration, working with materials that fully engage their interest, children appear to be refreshed and contented. Through continued concentrated work of their own choice, children grow in inner discipline and peace. She called this process “normalization” and cited it as “the most important single result of our whole work” (The Absorbent Mind, 1949).
We feel proud to hear such encouraging words and are so thankful for the work and trust that our families and students have put into the Fireweed Classroom!

Here are a few updates from our classroom:

1. Science Fair Volunteers! Would you enjoy being a part of a lively science fair event where enthusiastic students are proudly showing others their hard work? Are you looking for a one-time, half-day volunteer opportunity, rather than a long-term commitment? Then consider volunteering as an event or registration volunteer at the Mountain Village Montessori Science Fair, to be held on Thursday, April 20 from 1:30 to 5:00. You will be able to sign up for a 30-45 minute shift to help students set up projects, direct visitors and monitor the event, and perform other tasks to keep the fair moving. If you can’t volunteer during the event, but would like to help out by donating drinks or snacks, please contact me as well.
Please contact me at if you are interested or have any questions. We will be sending a sign-up sheet to interested volunteers as a next step.

2. Animal books for research! Please help your child find a book on their animal. Email me if you have a hard time finding a book on their animal. Students are expected to have their notes done by the end of work cycle tomorrow.

3. Time to run Science Fair experiments will end this Friday, March 31. Please be sure that your child brings in all their required materials to run their experiment one last time! Next week, we will begin to analyze our data and form conclusions.

4. Our Lynx students have enjoyed doing science-based projects on Friday afternoons! We would like to continue this schedule for the rest of the year and our Dragon students will join in once they’ve completed the Science Fair. If you are available to run a science station on Fridays, from 1:00-2:30, please let me know. Ideally, you’d run a station that might last 30 minutes, 3 times. Small groups of students will rotate through the stations. If you have ideas that you’d like to do with the students, that is great! If you would rather run a station that we’ve created, that is also wonderful. Please send me an email if you’re interested in participating.

5. Spring Weather! Students will go outside as long as the temperature is above 10 degrees and the weather is not dangerous. Please be sure your child has appropriate clothing for recess! As always, they can leave jackets/snow pants/boots inside their lockers if that is more helpful.

6. Weekly flower donations. I do my best to buy a bunch of flowers each week so we can add a little class to our lunchtime 🙂 If you are interested in buying a small bouquet of flowers over the weekend to bring to school on Sunday, please let me know. Many of our students enjoy arranging the flowers into the vases and donating any extra flowers to another classroom. As we continue to study plants, students may begin to dissect flowers, so we will use them for this purpose, as well.
